VSS Capabilities....

This might be an ignorant question but I can't figure this one out on my own.

I want to create a simple backup tool. OK VSS is the right thing, BUT I want to be able to backup not just the file as it is but historic files as well and I want be able to restore fileas and historic files as well.

What do I mean with historic files in this case. Well, if I don't misunderstand the previous versions feature of Windows 7, these are shadow copies. (Am I right or wrong here?). So basically I want to be able to restore not only files but actually restore a shadow copy or recreate a shadow copy so that the previous files shows up in the Windows 7 previous files feature in windows explorer.

So is this feasible in VSS at all? If it is, is it feasible in AlphaVSS?

Unfortunately I have no knowledge of how the previous versions feature of the later versions of Windows works so I can't help you there. I would suggest asking a question about how to do this using VSS on MSDN forums or StackOverflow. If you know how to do it using the Win32 API VSS interfaces it is probably quite easy to figure out if it can be done using AlphaVSS as well.

Sorry I can't be of more help here. Perhaps someone else has some input?
